" It's, um…. Like… It's who we are? ” " No is actually your background”. " Nah I think it's this…. ” When ever asked to define tradition it took each of our class a little while, and some fast googling, to figure out exactly what it intended. Each people had a distinct idea of what culture is usually, which is by itself an example of our own individual traditions. We each have different backgrounds and beliefs, and these come together to form a exceptional culture, specific to each individuals. The word ‘culture' means ‘the ideas, persuits, and sociable behaviour of the particular persons or society' (Google, 2014), or ‘a specialised life style for a number of people' (Unitec, 2014). We learn the traditions of those about us and take on areas of the society we live within, this provides you with us an important part of each of our identity and sense of self. Several cultures each have norms, persuits and behaviours that differ from other cultures, even those that are geographically close. These can change and evolve with time, meaning tradition is in a state of debordement. The lifestyle of New Zealand today, for example , is quite different to what it would have been a hundred, or even fifty in years past. Culture is changing for a lot of reasons, a pair of these are culture pattern and retention. Acculturation happens when one particular culture lives within one more and still maintains much of the original culture. One lifestyle might take in or acculturate certain areas of the various other culture but generally they keep with their traditional lifestyle and retain their own particular culture. Among the this would be a classmate of mine in high school who have moved to Fresh Zealand with her friends and family from S. africa. When the lady was in course she would speak English, yet at her house her culture remained much the same when it was back home, speaking Afrikaans and eating similar food as they had before.
