Andrew Marvell was a popular metaphysical poet who asked questions with regards to the ideological and theological. The Renaissance period was a time that openly accepted new ideas and new philosophy. Marvell, whose writing was generally of any witty characteristics and filled with elaborate conceits, challenged common concepts such as love, fortune and period, reflecting on carpe diem in his poems 'The Definition of Love' and 'To His Coy Mistress'.
Marvell's 'The Definition of Love' is a good example of lyric poems based on graceful conceits, as it puts out the illogical universal concept of the love as well as boundaries inside the real world. Marvell writes about unrequited interests, insisting that Fate alone acts against true love. Through the poem, the persona details his love's story. He outlines that it was impossible inside the first stanza and allows this fact in the last.
