The overall goal of the publication is to instruct new, and old, market leaders to become better leaders. While anyone can usually benefit from reading this book, the designed audience can be leaders in a organization. One particular statistic that should be alarming to all leaders of businesses was that 65 percent of folks leave their particular companies as a result of managers (Abrashoff, 2002). Just how can leaders transform that statistic? Abrashoff is convinced that running a ship is incredibly similar to running any business; it takes encouraging a crew to perform with the best of their particular abilities to obtain optimal effectiveness and completing tasks. He successfully takes his experience from leading a Naval crew and teaches the audience how to apply it to their organizations. Along with highlighting just about every winning second he fantastic crew experienced on the USS Benfold, Captain Abrashoff also shows declining moments the team had to put up with. Those good examples show the target audience that in order to succeed, there needs to be some trials along the way.

Abrashoff presents readers towards the 11 lessons he offers learned that helped him turn into a better head: take command word; lead by simply example; pay attention aggressively; talk purpose and meaning; build a climate of trust; look for results, not salutes; take calculated dangers; go beyond standard procedure; build people up; generate oneness; and enhance the crew's quality lifestyle. He devoted a chapter to each lessons and clarifies the importance of each and how to apply them to any business.

Chapter a single talks about just how Abrashoff became the captain of USS Benfold and just how he had for taking command. His first obstacle was thinking if everybody was going to like him. He quickly noticed that " end up being likable can be not high among a ship captain's job requirements… to be highly regarded, trusted, and effective” is (Abrashoff, 2002, p. 12). After that, he realized " a challenge to get leaders… can be attracting and retaining … the best staff and more important, how to stimulate them so that they work with passion, energy, and enthusiasm” (Abrashoff, 2002, p. 12). Market leaders need to tune in to their employees so they can better understand what they go through. Along with listening, employees must be motivated. Inspiration helps personnel want to do all their work is to do the best job. Another obstacle was learning the real reason soldiers are not re-enlisting. Abrashoff (2002) stated the following:

I actually read some exit studies, interviews conducted by the army to find out why

people are leaving. I actually assumed that low shell out would be the 1st reason, however in fact it was fifth. The top reason has not been being cured with value or pride; second had been prevented from making a direct impact on the corporation; third, not being

listened to; and 4th, not being paid with more responsibility. (p. 13) All of those reasons are very comparable to why individuals are leaving civilian jobs. Only 1 conclusion can come from that: all leaders are making a similar mistakes.

The best answer for those hurdles was summed up flawlessly when he mentioned his organising principle. Abrashoff (2002) explained " the real key to as being a successful pilote is to see the ship throughout the eyes from the crew” (p. 13). The best choice does not often come up with the ideas; frontrunners would advantage greatly if they paid attention to their team more. Strengthening employees makes it realize their potential. When ever " presented...
